Working with a LAMA, by Yval Avital<\/strong><\/a>
\nLama Samten Yeshe Rinpoche is around my age.\u00a0He was born in a small village in Tibet and from the age of 8 had entered the B\u00f6n Buddhism as a monk.\u00a0He studied with great masters, and also had been the master of 400 priests in a temple.\u00a0He holds a Doctor in Philosophy and is a teacher of the sacred masks dance of the B\u00f6n tradition.\u00a0Now he is based in Paris and travels all around Europe to teach meditation and philosophy.\u00a0I meet Lama Samten in the apartment of Judith, his assistant and a new dear friend of mine.\u00a0In 2 minutes we become friends.\u00a0He tells us that he will give his money for the concerts of his people.\u00a0It is important for him to explain his motivation for the project,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We jump into the work.\u00a0Lama Samten smiles when he sees different B\u00f6n mantras, musical instruments and mudras within the musical score.\u00a0His part is being filled up with notes in Tibetan and French.\u00a0I am amazed how quick it reacts to the graphic and textual indications.\u00a0After we finish the first rehearsal in Paris, we go – Lama and me for a coffee in the corner.\u00a0I have my coffee n.10 of the day and the Lama have juice.\u00a0We speak about our families, politics and people.\u00a0Just like friends do.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The mantras, mandalas, chants, prayers, rituals of cleaning the karma, breathing meditations are anchored in the voice.\u00a0The human voice is a vessel in which the B\u00f6n priests are putting verbal and non-verbal metaphysic meanings of their beliefs regarding the essential functions of their reality.<\/p>\n

It is interesting to reflect on the use of vocals in the B\u00f6n culture and in Buddhism in general, in comparison to the musical use of \u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00a0Amen<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00bb in the European Cristian liturgy – while both carry a function of a meditative word (even though That in Hebew the word \u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00a0Amen<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00bb carry Many meanings Deriving from ict root\u00a0\u00a0AMAN<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0– qui Could hint art, practice, faith, artist) the Catholic tradition uses ict AMEN Either have a closing pattern (music all parameters go down) or As a rich base of musical movement and decoration (\u00a0Melisma<\/em>\u00a0In musical terms), the vocals demostrated by Lama Samten are a representation of the constant, the invariable, the eternal.\u00a0Opposing this difference – gold complimentary relationship if you wish – makes me think of the great debate entre\u00a0\u00a0Heraclitus of Ephesus<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0Parmenides of Elea<\/strong>\u00a0:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The first sustaining that all is movement (\u00a0\u03a0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u1fe5\u03b5\u1fd6<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0– \u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00a0everything flows<\/em>\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0);\u00a0The second negating the existence of difference, time, movement (and distinguishing between our perception of movement \u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00a0the way of phenomena<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00bb and its static timeless truth \u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00a0the way of the Logos<\/em>\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0).<\/p>\n

I think that in the Buddhism of B\u00f6n there are both of these constant – the invariable of the vocal mantras and mudras, and the constant instability of its drums sudden\u00a0\u00a0accelerando<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0or\u00a0\u00a0rubato<\/em>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

I can not wait to hear these elements together with the CROWD part and the rest of the soloists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
